To commemorate their new retail partner, The Mane Choice released an Ulta exclusive collection of products with supposed supernatural defining and moisturizing powers. I’m not as familiar with The Mane Choice as I was overwhelmed with the frequent product launches but to get acquainted with the brand, I decided that I had to start somewhere and what could be better than their newest (at the time) collection? The POW! (Products Obsessively Working) Collection comes in the cutest comic book inspired packaging and claims to provide moisture, definition, and shine while also making hair easier to detangle.
With ingredients like venus bark, kanka extract, plantain extract, cinnamon bark, and angelica root which are all new to me, I was ready to put the purple-tinted products to the test and see if they packed a powerful punch. Read on for my review The Mane Choice POW! collection.
The Mane Choice POW! Mask
After shampooing with my normal shampoo, I applied the POW! mask on damp hair from roots to ends and covered my hair with a plastic cap and sat under a hooded dryer for about 15 minutes as directed. I left the mask on for an additional 45 minutes without heat as instructed before rinsing it out of my hair. The first thing I noticed about the mask was the smell. The scent is similar to grape candy but it’s almost sickly sweet, especially when using it in conjunction with the rest of the line. This mask is supposed to seal cuticles, make detangling easier, and leave hair extra shiny. Out of the 3 claimed benefits, I only saw the latter. Although my hair did look shinier, my hair did not feel particularly moisturized after rinsing the product out of my hair, which made it harder to detangle with the mask alone.
The Mane Choice POW! Leave-In
The leave-in had the same sickly sweet smell but easily glided through my hair, which made it snap to moisturize and detangle my strands. The texture wasn’t too thick for my 4c coils and a little goes a long way but this may be too heavy for those with looser curls like type 2 curls.
The Mane Choice POW! Gel
This was the product I was most interested in trying as I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hair product with glitter in it. I was skeptical at first but as soon as I applied this gel to the first section of hair, I knew it was a winner. The texture is amazing, it has great slip for a gel and my curls popped, ok? This gel combined with the leave-in is a match made and now one of my go-to combos for wash-day. I even let the smell slide because the results are that good. Speaking of results, check them out below and tell that these are not the most defined curls you’ve ever seen. Once it dries, the glitter from the gel is so subtle but it definitely makes the hair looks so much more shinier. You do need to be careful not to use too much of the gel as this can cause flaking.
RESULTS
Of these 3 products, I’d recommend picking up the leave-in and gel to get lasting definition and shine. The first time I used these products, my wash and go lasted for about 3-4 days. I was heavy-handed with the gel the second time around so I saw flaking on day 2. Besides the lack of moisture from the mask and the scent of this collection, I’m happy with my purchases and will continue to use these products up. I also just ordered the Tropical Moringa line from their Memorial Day Sale, so I’m excited to try that out. I’ll let you know if there’s anything from that line that would be worth a try.
Here’s a video I posted on YouTube of the products in action. Be sure to subscribe to my channel while you’re there.
