Hotel Review | The Hoxton Southwark London

Located in the calm South Bank neighborhood, and a short drive away from the River Thames, Borough Market, the London Eye, and the Tate Modern museum, The Hoxton Southwark is the perfect hotel for cool creatives looking for culture and good vibes. Travel to the sites via the London Tube or if you’re on a schedule, call a taxi or Uber.

Entering The Hoxton Southwark feels like stepping into a members only social club that’s also used as a high-end co-working space. There are plants, books, and comfy seating everywhere you turn. The marble countertop bar feels luxe but welcoming. This cool neighborhood vibe is the reason I love Hoxton properties so much.

Checking-In into The Hoxton Southwark

The check-in process was seamless. I was greeted warmly by the two front desk agents and although in I arrived a few hours earlier than the standard 2:00pm check-in time, I was able to receive one of the 192 rooms with no problem. I pre-paid for my room, so I handed over my ID and credit card for a quick pre-authorization for incidentals. The front desk agent handed over my keys, gave a brief overview of the on-site amenities, and wished me happy stay in London.

Room and Accommodations

As I mentioned, this isn’t my first time staying at a Hoxton property, so I already expected a beautiful but cozy room and The Hoxton Southwark did not disappoint. I actually stayed in two different rooms, one before we headed to Paris and another once we returned to London, and both were just as clean and comfortable. Room sizes range from “Shoebox” to “Biggy,” and I booked the middle of the range “Cosy” (180-225 sq) room for my first stay and the “Snug” (170 sq ft) for my second. I stayed alone both times and both rooms were really comfortable. I think the “Cosy” room would also be a good option for double beds but the “Snug” would be better for a solo traveler or a couple.

Room Amenities

  • Free WiFi

From the music playing on the Marshall speaker when you enter, to the green tiled bathroom and green paneled accent walls, wood-framed floor mirror, glass enclosed shower, gold accented light fixtures, marble topped surfaces, window seating and curated artwork, I loved everything about the rooms.

I personally love sleek and modern decor for my home but I love when hotel rooms have some personality without being gimmicky and over-the-top, which The Hoxton hotels do so well. The one downside of the rooms were the limited storage space, but since I was only there for a few days at a time, this was fine. If you’re planning a longer stay and have lots of luggage, you may want to look into larger room options that may have additional storage or inquiry about a rolling rack before booking.

There was also no counter space on the bathroom sink but there was a marbled ledge above the toilet that held the towels, which had ample space for toiletry bags.

I loved having tea – compliments of the hotel – while seated by the windows in both rooms. The first room I stayed in was in the front of the hotel with a view of the building directly across the street. I didn’t mind this as I was able to people watch as pedestrians walked along the street in front of the hotel. The second room I stayed in had a tree which as strange as it sounds, I loved as it just seems more British.

Facilities and Services

One thing to note about The Hoxton Southwark is that they don’t have the amenities found at luxury or bigger chain hotels such as a pool, gym or spa. They describe their hotels as a more neighborhood vibe and that’s exactly what you get. You’ll feel welcomed and cozy at The Hoxton Southwark but if you’re looking to be pampered, I wouldn’t recommend staying here. However, if you’re a creative looking to get some work done, The Hoxton offers 6 meeting rooms in their “Apartment” which is they describe as “a fresh and airy space with a wraparound balcony.”

Dining Options

There are two dining options including the Albie, an all-day restaurant located in the lobby, and Seabird, which is their Portuguese and Spanish-inspired rooftop restaurant. I didn’t get a chance to try Seabird but I did have a salad at Albie after we arrived and it wasn’t anything special. However, I discovered my love of ginger beer after having a bottle of London Essence, and this quickly became my go-to beverage in London. I also enjoyed morning oat milk lattes at the beautiful lobby bar, which I desperately needed given the California to London time difference.

The hotel also offers room service but after the salad, we chose to keep our dining to other restaurants around London, including Madera at Treehouse London.

Price and Value for Money

I booked my first night via the Chase travel portal (to use my Ultimate Rewards points) about 10 days before my arrival and the room costs $503.30 after taxes. I booked another night via AirBnB (still 10 days before) for $264.52. I’m not sure why there was such a big difference in the room rate for each date but I chose to stay there even with the $500 rate to be close to my travel party. If I was traveling alone, I may have chosen to stay somewhere a little less expensive that first night but the $264 rate for the second leg of the trip was a great deal. All in all, I enjoyed my stay and think I received good value for the money.
